Most states require liability car insurance, which covers two types of expenses if you cause a car accident: property damage and bodily injury. Liability covers repair costs for another person’s car, along with medical costs including prescriptions, medical care or lost wages as a result of an accident.

Comprehensive coverage pays for your vehicle repair and replacement costs in incidents other than a collision or accident. These may include situations when your car is stolen, vandalized or damaged by falling objects, fire, hail, windstorm, explosion, earthquake, water or lightning.

Collision coverage pays for your vehicle repair if you get into an accident with another vehicle or a non-moving object such as a tree or a fence, regardless of who caused the accident. Unlike liability coverage, it does not extend to expenses for another’s person damaged car.

Medical payments coverage pays for medical and dental expenses like ER and doctor visits, X-rays and more for you and your passengers after an accident. Regardless of who caused the accident, it can also help cover the costs of a funeral, should you or your passengers be fatally injured.

Personal Injury Protection covers the expenses for medical care and lost wages if you are unable to work after an accident. It covers you, your passengers and other injured parties, regardless of who was at fault for the accident.

Rental Reimbursement pays for a rental car while your car is repaired after a covered accident, if it is not available for more than 24 hours. It does not cover regular maintenance costs or rent-a-car services in non-incident-related circumstances.

Roadside Assistance covers the costs of towing your car to the nearest repair facility in case of non-accident car damage or a breakdown.
