Do all silver fillings need to be replaced?
Even though they require more tooth structure to be taken out, this does not mean all silver fillings need to be replaced. Small amalgams can have a favorable prognosis and typically are not recommended for replacement. Larger amalgams have a higher chance of failing, but even then, could have a favorable prognosis.

Why Every Six Months?
Regular visits allow us to remove plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing can’t fully eliminate. These appointments also give us the chance to catch small issues, like cavities or early signs of gum disease, before they turn into more extensive concerns.
Does Everyone Need the Same Schedule?
Not always. Some patients may need to visit more frequently, especially if they have a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, or certain health conditions. Kids, teens with braces, and adults managing dental concerns may benefit from additional cleanings.
How does the process work?
When you arrive at your appointment, your dental hygienist or dental assistant will begin cleaning your teeth, starting with scraping off any plaque or tartar that has accumulated. Plaque is a soft deposit that builds up from the food and drinks you consume, particularly sugars and starches. When not removed from your teeth by regular brushing and flossing, plaque hardens and becomes tartar, which is more difficult to remove.
What happens after the cleaning?
After your dental cleaning, your dentist will examine your teeth for swelling, inflammation, or redness. The dentist will also check your gum health by measuring the spaces between the tops of your gums and where they attach to the teeth. Finally, the dental team will take digital x-rays to find any hidden issues. Your dentist will discuss the results and any recommendations before you leave.
