A common HVAC rule is to keep your system maintained before extreme weather hits. For most homes, that means changing the air filter regularly, keeping vents open and clear, and scheduling seasonal maintenance so small issues can be caught before they turn into major heating or cooling problems.

One common AC rule is that your air conditioner should generally be able to cool your home about 15 to 20 degrees below the outdoor temperature when it is working properly. In San Antonio heat, your system may run longer during peak afternoon hours, but it should still produce cold air, remove humidity, and keep your home reasonably comfortable.

The AC rule usually refers to not overworking your system. Keep your thermostat at a steady, reasonable setting, replace dirty filters, and avoid turning the temperature way down to “cool faster.” Your AC cools at the same rate either way, so extreme thermostat settings can increase strain without solving the problem.

The 3-minute rule means you should wait at least a few minutes before turning your AC back on after shutting it off. This gives the compressor time to reset and helps prevent short cycling, which can put unnecessary stress on the system. Many modern thermostats already have a built-in delay for this reason.

If your AC is running but not cooling, the system may have restricted airflow, a dirty air filter, low refrigerant, a frozen coil, a clogged drain line, dirty outdoor coils, or a failing component. If the air coming from your vents is weak or warm, it is best to have a professional inspect the system before the problem gets worse.
