Total labor cost
$240.00
- Total worker-hours
- 8
- Base wages
- $200.00
- Labor burden
- $40.00
- Loaded cost per worker-hour
- $30.00
Labor burden is your estimate for employer costs on top of wages. Overtime premiums are not calculated.
How to calculate it
Labor cost = workers × hours per worker × hourly wage × (1 + labor burden ÷ 100)
A worked example
Two workers spending four hours each at $25 an hour earn $200 in base wages. A 20% labor burden adds $40, bringing total labor cost to $240 and the loaded hourly cost to $30 per worker.
Count worker-hours, not just elapsed time
A four-hour job with two workers uses eight worker-hours. Enter the time each worker spends on the job. If hours or pay differ across the crew, calculate each group separately and add the results.
Use your own labor burden
The example percentage is an illustration. Your actual employer costs depend on your location, coverage, benefits, and business. Use your payroll and insurance records to estimate the percentage above base wages.
Carry labor into the full job price
Labor cost is one part of a quote. Add materials, travel, overhead, processing fees, and profit in the service price calculator. Use the loaded hourly rate there so you do not add the same burden twice.
