Selling price
$210.00
- Total cost
- $150.00
- Profit after entered costs
- $60.00
- Profit margin
- 28.57%
Markup is a percentage of cost. Profit margin is a percentage of the selling price.
How to calculate it
Selling price = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100)
A worked example
A $150 cost with a 40% markup sells for $210. The $60 profit is 28.57% of the selling price. To achieve a 40% margin instead, that same $150 cost would need a $250 selling price.
Use the right base for your percentage
Markup divides profit by cost. Margin divides profit by selling price. Write down which one you use when you set prices or compare jobs, because the two percentages describe different things.
Include the cost of sourcing materials
Buying, collecting, storing, and delivering materials can cost more than the supplier invoice. Include those costs before applying your markup if the selling price needs to cover them.
Allow for transaction fees separately
The margin shown here uses only the cost you enter. Payment processing fees reduce what remains. Use the service price calculator when you need a selling price that also covers a percentage processing fee.
